MD Anaesthesiology

MD Anaesthesia is a 3-year postgraduate degree in medicine. Anaesthesiology focuses on the utilization of drugs that minimize pain by causing insensibility. Under this degree, students learn about areas such as ambulatory anaesthesia, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, neuro anaesthesia, obstetrical anesthesiology, and pain management.

The branch of medicine dedicated to relieving pain and inducing anaesthesia during surgery and other medical procedures. An anesthesiologist is a doctor (MD or DO) who practices anesthesia. Anesthesiologists are physicians specializing in perioperative care, developing anesthetic plans, and the administration of anesthetics.

MD Anaesthesia refers to the practice of administering medications either by injection or by inhalation that will induce a temporary state of loss of sensation or awareness, thus blocking operative pain and suffering. Anesthesia includes analgesia (relief or prevention from pain), paralysis (muscle relaxation), amnesia (memory loss), or unconsciousness. Generally, a patient is anesthetized to perform painless medical procedures (surgery or dentistry) that would otherwise cause severe or intolerable pain.

Eligibility Criteria for MD Anaesthesiology

1. The candidates should have a degree of MBBS with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. Some reputed colleges and institutes should conduct entrance examinations to get admission to this degree course.

2. Candidates need to have obtained MBBS degree from an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and completed one year of compulsory internship after passing the final professional examination which is MBBS before the month of April of the relevant academic year.

3. The aggregate score to get admitted to 50%. However, the qualifying percentage differs from institution to institution.

4. There is an age limit prescribed by a few institutes that provide part-time degrees.

5. Candidates should have aggregate marks of 40% to 60% in the undergraduate degree.

Admission Process 

1. The selection of eligible candidates is based on the rank obtained in the national level entrance National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Post Graduate (NEET-PG).

2. Admission to the MD Anaesthesiology program is through both entrance examination and merit-based. On the basis of merit as determined in a centralized competitive test held at the national level.

3. On the basis of merit as determined in the competitive test conducted by the State Government or by another competent authority appointed by the State Government or by the concerned university/ group of universities in the same State.

There is a good scope of anesthesia in India right now and in foreseeable future as the number of surgical procedures will increase due to the increasing population. In anesthesia you have the freedom to work however you want. You can join a medical college or govt hospital or corporate hospital or you can freelance between hospitals on a per case basis.

The best thing is that this branch is always in demand as a number of ppl taking it are less. Another advantage is that there is no OPD in anesthesia, your dealing with gen public will be very less, which is a big advantage in India.
